Hyatt Lake Day Trip

Cory, our girls, and I went to Hyatt Lake today for a day trip. In years past, for Memorial Weekend, we have always gone to Brookings, OR for their Azalea Festival, but chose to skip that trip this year since we will be heading to the coast in a few weeks to celebrate my birthday.

Before heading out of town today, we stopped at 7-11 to get Slurpee's for the road. Even Melania is big enough this year to handle her very own Slurpee, and boy does she like them!

When we arrived at Hyatt Lake, we found a turnout beside the road and set up our picnic at the edge of the lake. It was a little windy to begin with, but otherwise was an absolutely gorgeous day.

Before eating, Cory and the girls went exploring for creatures, but only found ants. Lots and lots of ants. The kids had fun walking along logs and were amazed at how strong their daddy was, lifting and overturning logs to see what would be found underneath.

We watched an Osprey flying to its nest at the top of this tree out in the water.

Melania was so proud to be putting her gymnastics skills to use. She enjoyed walking down the logs almost as much as she liked jumping off of them.

After our picnic and exploring, we found the pizza place that advertises hand scooped ice cream (which confused Julietta a little - the "hand scooping". Let's just say that she was a little grossed out until I explained to her what that meant). Julietta had chocolate (which ended up all over her face), Melania chose strawberry, and I had rainbow sherbet. Cory was too stuffed from our picnic to want any ice cream.

We sat outdoors at a table in the shade which had a gorgeous view of the lake. I absolutely LOVED being there. It was a combination of my family together relaxing, the gorgeous weather and scenery, a nostalgic marriage of wonderful childhood memories including camping as a kid at Indian Mary, R.O.S. in 6th grade, my Grandpa Buzz' cabin in Eastern Oregon, and my love for the idea of Summer Camps, and cabins on lakes. I didn't want to leave, and hope to go back again soon. I can hardly believe that all of this is less then 30 minutes away.

Julietta was laughing and embarrassed when I told her I wanted to take a picture of her chocolate face. She said, "Mom, are you going to put that on your website?!" This isn't the first time recently that I have managed to embarrass my child. Guess she and I are both getting to "that age".

After our ice cream, we looked around a little more before heading back to the truck to move on back home. You can see that Melania is wearing her Elmo hat that her Grandpa Skip got for her. As soon as she saw that her daddy was wearing a hat today, she decided that she too must have hers.

Below is a picture of our ice cream spot. Maybe next time we'll try their pizza. They claim to have "the best on the mountain". Then again, it may be the only pizza on the mountain...

Last but not least, I'll leave you with a short video. Enjoy!
